July 10th

July 10th

Shore duty has been accomplished and the crab net is retrieved and there are two crabs that have taken up residence. When I try to evict the male he lunges at my pinky when I attempt to untangle him. He is BIG AND MEAN. He knows that he is on the menu and pissed about that, the lady is free to go on a shopping trip with the girls that were here yesterday.

Today is a Buzz Lightyear day we are on our way to a special place Kynoch inlet and through a narrow tidal bore into Culpepper Lagoon.

In last year’s blog I waxed incessantly about this place and failed miserably trying to describe the raw beauty of it. Even photos were far short of the mark.

I think I have devised a soliloquy that best describes about the being here. Last winter when in Palm Springs I developed what I considered to be impacted molar tooth. The pounding of pain reached up to under my eyeball. A root canal was in order. DID I TELL YOU HOW MUCH I HATE PEOPLE MESSING IN MY MOUTH WITH DRILLS AND THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GAG? Now going to a dentist in USA can be a little daunting on the pocket book. Our neighbors in the park raved about the dentist in Alcodonas, Mexico. They are American trained, etc., etc and half the price of across the border in USA.

Well it is only about a two and a half hours drive from our tin box. The trip is going to be enhanced by the fact that Penny and I are going in the VET. Long story it turns out that the tooth I think is the pain is OK and the one that’s next to it is the one with the pain and cracked. There is nothing they can do about it but remove it. This is a sure sign that I am going very old as I start losing all my teeth. The first visit is amazing as he removes almost all the tooth but the roots.

I now think I am home free. Second visit a couple of days later I notice a change in the procedure as he brings out a Humongous syringe filled to the brim with enough Novocain to numb a  horse. He produces a tool kit similar to the one I have on the boat. It is noted that the same procedure to remove a broken rusty screw in a piece of hard wood was no different in technique. First you grip the broken piece and start twisting and twisting careful not to break it off short. It is a tough one as he is almost standing on the dentist chair. Back and forth and I can hear the roots groaning and cracking in protest.

Kynoch Falls
This is no five minute surgical maneuver it 40 PLUS. This is his brute force waging war on my jaw. He pauses for a millisecond to ask if I am OK, but at this stage it is just HIM AND THE ROOT. He does not even notice the tears streaming down my face. I HAVE TO LEAVE AND LEAVE NOW! The only place that I could go and not leave was the most serene place on my planet, CULPEPPER LAGOON with it snow fields, sparking glacier water and any superlatives you can think of. My mind scanned the tall grass fan at the termination of the Riot River with a mother bear and a new cub frolicking behind her mimicking her every move. It was if I had been removed from my body and the pain. The dental operation was over and a new bridge replaced the hole left from the evacuee.

That is how it is in the Culpepper Lagoon, too beautiful to describe and put into words, a place that is best enjoyed and savoured in your mind.
