More Eucott Bay

Some History of Eucott Bay

The hot springs is located off some old pilings .This would indicate that a wharf went from the very shallow bay to the hot spring.  Upon sourcing one of the guide books (Waggoner) they interviewed Shearwater owner Craig Widsten and he said that his father in 1948 packed mud and hot spring water for sale to health and beauty fanatics in Europe. When in Shearwater I met Craig and we talked about Eucott and he said that it was his first job as a kid to go up there with 45 gal. drums and wood barrels. They would fill them to the brim and bring them back to shearwater. He said that the Union Steamships would ship the mud and spring water off to Vancouver, where it was forwarded to a distributor in Europe.

When we were at the hot springs we walked in the shallow water through sticky mud without the benefit of a dock to keep our tootsies clean and dry. Any one for the asking, “FOR FREE”, could have had the slime that had gathered between our toes and stuck to my feet on the journey from the “Ravens” to the shore. It was smelly, sticky and stuck to your feet like molasses.

VOICES FROM A DISTANCE on VHF 16

Now we know the flock is near as they are calling on the radio looking for mother Mike. He is tending the flock and moving them to green pastures called Ocean Falls where they will feed on the lush environment of free W- FI, unlimited fresh clear water, and be witness to the history of a dying community that was home to over 5000 souls a breath of time ago.  Then they will move on to the green pastures of Eucott Bay and the hot springs. I can picture years ago Mike floating high out of the spring water on his back with a cold beer planted on his chest. Ruby their dog now will be scampering on the muddy beach in the lush tall grass and have to swim back on “Shaman”. Next stop will be Shearwater for good times and of course green pastures.   Hopefully we will meet up there and share the same bays as we have done before.
